Using Pot Odds in Your Favor

Pot odds are used by poker players to determine the expected value (profitability over the long run) of the play. Odds are often converted into percentage probabilities and may be expressed as a win-to-loss ratio or win-to-loss odds. Use the following formula to determine your percentage of winning:

Win / (win + loss).

Thus, if you have 1 to 3 odds of winning, it translates as 1 / (1 + 3) = 1 / 4 = 25%

At every point in poker, the pot odds the player faces change. The lower the odds of the player are, the more likely it is that the player should fold the hand.

An Example:
In Texas hold’em, to approximate the percentage that a player will improve his hand on the next card is as follows:

(Number of outs) x 2 + 1.

For example, if a player has a potential flush, there are nine cards that can improve his hand, making a (9 x 2) + 1 = 19% chance that the next card will give him a flush. For two cards, the probability is given as follows:

(Number of outs) x 4 – 1.
