Avoid Bad Beats

One of the most important skills in poker is the ability to avoid bad beats. Every poker player, at any level of poker, don't like it when they get a "bad beat"; the bad beat is the most frustrating and annoying occurrence in the game.

What is a "bad beat", and how can a poker player overcome them?

A "bad beat" is simply an emotion experienced when a player is the overwhelming favorite to win a game's hand but in the long run loses. This really irritates the player when he loses all his chips and leaves the table on a bad beat; it is only because the player is convinced that they had the winning hand.

Basically there are two types of bad beats in a game of Texas Hold'em. One type that the player can't do anything about it and the other one that can really be avoided by the player.

Here is an example of the first type of a bad beat that can't be avoided. Let us say that the player A got a pair of aces, the foremost possible beginning hand, and at the same time, player B is holding a pair of fours. The flop comes with an A-Q-4 and player A goes with an all-in. Player B calls, and at that point, player A has the best hand, with three aces. The next turn is the card 4 and the player A didn't catch an ace on the river; player A loses to 4 fours.

In this scenario the player could not do anything else. There is no way that the player would, or should, fold his triple aces; the player had the best possible hand. If the player folds he might as well take up another hobby.

Here is an example of the second type of an avoidable "bad beat". Player A has an Ace-Queen. This time, the player B is low in chips and, in a desperation move, player B is going with an all-in, with the cards Jack-Nine. Player A decides to call, because they feel that they have the better hand. The flop turn to be 10 7 2 and player B hits an 8, forming a straight.

To avoid this, first one needs to understand that in every online poker tournament the occurrences of "bad beats" are much higher than in a live poker game.

An average player online is more likely to play a hand in which he is distracted by other games. Bet big when the player hits a hand.
